I will be in the exhibit hall throughout the event cooking up appetizers and snacks for you all to try. Join me at the National Museum of the American Indian for an exciting discussion on the fusion of Asian and Latino cuisines, as part of the Smithsonian Asian-Latino Festival 2013.

A Conversation about Asian-Latino Food Crossings
“Asian-Latino Fusion” has been a popular restaurant industry concept for over two decades. But Asian and Latino food cultures have a much longer and richer history of intersection, stretching from the farm to the home table, from the mercado to the food truck. “Gourmet Intersections: Asian-Latino Food Crossings” considers Asian-Latino foodways through a broad lens, tracing connections across a range of histories, geographies, and cultures.

Join White House chef Cristeta Comerford, Iron Chef America judge Trevor Corson, Pati’s Mexican Table host Pati Jinich, and journalist and celebrated cookbook author Anupy Singla for a lively discussion about the changing shape of shared food traditions, touching on the restaurant industry, the space of the home, and the migration and evolution of sushi from Japan across the Americas.

There will be a tour of the historic farm, cocktails, live music, and a dinner featuring dishes from my cookbook. It will be a perfect summer fiesta in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains for a good cause — I hope you will join me!

Heirloom foods let us taste history while preserving it, but what do “heirlooms” really mean and where do they come from? Join the conversation about native plants, new varieties, and the global influence of diverse communities on foods right here in the DC region. We’ll be talking with: Pati Jinich, host of “Pati’s Mexican Table” and cookbook author, Rayna Green, National Museum of American History curator and Native American food and plant specialist, Hiu Newcomb of Potomac Vegetable Farm, and Ira Wallace of the Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.

Cooking demonstration and tasting dinner at the Mexican Cultural Institute.

Asian demographic influence has a long and storied past in Mexico: Filipinos came through the Pacific trade on huge Galleons, Chinese communities worked to build Mexican railroads, and Japanese settlers found work on coffee plantations. Mexico’s culinary heritage is no stranger to this influence—dishes have benefited from their steaming, drying and salting techniques, as well as the spices. Join me as I explore the heritage of Asian cuisine in Mexico through dishes like Dried Shrimp Soup, Green Beans with Salted Peanuts and Chile de Arbol, Mexican-style Mongolian Beef, Spicy Tofu, and Sticky Rice Playero.
